 Image Bank - Tone

This photograph uses a black and white effect to show similar tones in many different colours on a beach and in the sky. Many of the colours look very similar now as colour is lost but the tones of each colour still remains.

This photograph shows a wilting flower and does not use black and white, the tone of the flower itself is changing throughout the petals.

This photograph shows a country road near a farm and represents tone very well. Like the black and white photos, a lot of the colour has been removed so that only the shades/tones of the different greens, browns, golds and blues can be seen. I prefer this effect to the black and white, I think it looks more antique and natural than the black and white.

The last three photographs share many characteristics of the first three. Colour is removed from all of them to show the tone of the colour rather than it's actual colour. The Eiffel Tower photo and the photo of the rusting car have been edited in a similar way, perhaps using duotone rather than just a black and white effect.
