Shape - Work Diary

I enjoyed this lesson very much, I used many shadows and silhouettes, though they won't be shown so well in the examples as I cannot upload my edited pictures to the blog. I enjoyed the shadows and the silhouettes and would gladly use this concept in future projects if possible.

This photograph simply shows a shadow of myself, it is not a great photo and I'm sure something better could have been devised with a little more thought and time, though I like the concept of shadow pictures.

This photograph looks a lot better when edited, everything but the leaf on the post is black, while the leaf keeps it's bright, autumn colours. It is clearly defined and I lie the style of this photograph.

If I were to do this session again I would take more time in the taking of photographs and would perhaps take some time designing something to shoot the shadow/silhouette of.

  • Large
This photograph shows many pigeons walking in a line, it is a good photograph representing shape because it uses both the silhouettes and the shadows of the pigeons. You see only outlines of the birds and this shows their shape very well.
This is a photo of an eagle or some other bird of prey and shows the bird's silhouette as the picture is taken when looking at the sun. This gives avery sharp view of the outline of the bird and shows it's shape very well. The silhouette is one of the most common and best ways to represent shape.
Unlike the photos prior to it, this shows a shape of a heart being made by the pages of a book. This is not a natural shape nor an obvious example of shape. This photograph shows how shape can be made and see in many different objects.
This photo again shows a silhouette. This time of a man holding a guitar case. This photograph is unusual as it shows the man at the top of a hill looking down a long road. It's not very clear as to what the photographer was trying to signify with this photo, if anything. Perhaps they just liked the look of it or maybe it has some deeper meaning.

The shape of something is it's exterior outline, it's ergonomic values, something without features or necessarily colour.

Image Bank - Shape

This photograph shows the silhouette of a robin or some other bird. The photo represents shape in photography very well, as do most silhouettes as they show only the detail of the outline of an object.
This photograph is again of birds but rather than using a silhouette to show the shape of the birds this photographer has used the birds to show a different shape; the birds necks are used to create what can be seen as a love hear between the two swans.
This photograph is again a silhouette and shows a small boy standing in a window. I believe this is a very good photograph as it not only shows shape very well, it also gives a very distinct mood. The child standing alone in the dark, looking outside for something gives off a very lonely feeling.

This photograph is again a silhouette. I am particularly fond of the use of silhouettes in photography, especially isn this visual element. This is a simple silhouette of a flower and I think it represents shape very well.
