Definition Page - Tone

Dictionary definition - The overall lightness or darkness of an area of an image.

This photo shows a setting that would, presumably, contain many colours. It has been set to black and white and so only the shades/tones of the different colours are visible. It shows the tone in many things and how the tone of colours can be the same while the colours are completely different.

This photograph also shows what should contain many contrasting colours as looking the same as they share the same tone. It shows how tone is used in real life, photographers, unlike the eye, are able to pick out the tone and remove the colours. People do not usually look at things, especially things of contrasting colours, by their tone.

This photograph is not only black and white, it shows the use of duotone, an alternative to black and white photography which adds one colour to the picture, replacing the ordinary black or white. This duotone shows the tone of this photo well, but can also be used to make photographs look perhaps, a little antique.

This picture is another good example of tone. The tone of some parts of the bridge, the people, the sea and the sky are very similar, though the colours are surely very contrasting when not removed.

Definition Page - Depth

Dictionary definition - 

1. The distance from the top or surface of something to its bottom.
2. Distance from the nearest to the farthest point of something or from the front to the back.

This photo shows how depth is used in photography to represent the third dimension. This often done by shooting from one end of a long object or pathway to the other. The object or path begins to narrow and shows this depth in the photo, it is made clear that on end is further away from the photographer than the other. 

This photo also shows the narrowing of a path. This is the easiest way to show depth in a photograph, this photo makes it very clear that depth i s what is being looked for.

This picture does use the narrowing of the object in focus. These converging parallels are the best and most appropriate way of showing depth in photography.

This picture also uses converging parallels and differentiation of focus in some areas of the picture. This gives the impression that this object is in face made of three dimensions and one end is further away than the other.

My definition - A third dimension, a way of showing that there is more to something than just it's shape.

Definition Page - Pattern

Dictionary Definition - A repeated decorative design.

This picture shows how pattern is seen in nature, in animals. This is  very obvious example but does show how many animals are just covered in pattern, whether it's for camouflage or decoration.

This shows how pattern is used by human in construction, it shows how pattern is useful to humans as it strengthens buildings and structures of walls and such. This example of a wall shows how pattern is used in the most simplistic structures that we use and see everyday.

This is an example of how patterns are used by people to represent different things in different situations, such as on roads and signs. These bright colours and the repeated patterns are used and seen in everyday life.

     This shows how pattern is seen absolutely everywhere in nature. The feathers themselves are made up of a striped pattern, while the feathers make a pattern, too. It shows how important pattern is in the structure of everything.

Definition Page - Reflection

Dictionary definition - The throwing back by a body or surface of light, heat, or sound without absorbing it.

This photograph shows a road by a lake, surrounded by mountains. This beautiful setting is all reflected in the lake and almost looks like the mountains are sitting on a mirror rather than a lake. I would love to be able to take pictures like this as examples of reflection, though I doubt I'd be able to find a suitable location.

This photo shows the reflection of a lizard of some kind drinking from water. This is a good example of distortion in a reflection; the ripples that the lizard is making in the water by drinking from it distort its own reflection.

This photograph is similar to the first one, what looks like a nearly perfect reflection of an entire scene can be seen in the water, both of the buildings and the sky.

This photograph is different, it shows only a pretty looking pond, perhaps in a garden or in front of a house. The water gives the reflection of a house or building of some kind and is interesting because unlike most examples of reflection in photography, only the reflection, not the actual object can be seen.







My own definition - Replication of an object or picture through the process of light bouncing off of a surface. 

Shape - Definition Page

Dictionary definition - The external form or appearance of someone or something.

This photograph shows many pigeons walking in a line, it is a good photograph representing shape because it uses both the silhouettes and the shadows of the pigeons. You see only outlines of the birds and this shows their shape very well.

This is a photo of an eagle or some other bird of prey and shows the bird's silhouette as the picture is taken when looking at the sun. This gives avery sharp view of the outline of the bird and shows it's shape very well. The silhouette is one of the most common and best ways to represent shape.

Unlike the photos prior to it, this shows a shape of a heart being made by the pages of a book. This is not a natural shape nor an obvious example of shape. This photograph shows how shape can be made and see in many different objects.

This photo again shows a silhouette. This time of a man holding a guitar case. This photograph is unusual as it shows the man at the top of a hill looking down a long road. It's not very clear as to what the photographer was trying to signify with this photo, if anything. Perhaps they just liked the look of it or maybe it has some deeper meaning.








The shape of something is it's exterior outline, it's ergonomic values, something without features or necessarily colour.

Definition Page - Blurring

Dictionary Definition - (Verb) Make or become unclear or less distinct.

This photograph uses blurring to show that the cheetah is moving very fast. Blurring is very interesting as it is something that cannot be seen by the human eye but is caught when using a camera. When a picture is blurred it usually implies that something is moving and is often used to express high speeds, like in this picture. The background is blurred while the cheetah is in focus, this was done by staying in line with the cheetah and moving with it to retain focus. This shows that the Cheetah is moving.

This photograph also shows movement and speed. The man is in focus as he is standing still in front of a moving train that is travelling past him at high speeds. The train is clearly blurred and on the move.












This photograph uses blurring to show the movement of a double-decker bus. Everything else in the picture is still, while the vehicle is extremely blurred, this is a very good example of blurring in photography.

This photograph is interesting as it shows movement of many different vehicles at once. It is often used in videos rather than photographs and shows the speed and mass of traffic in cities. I like what these photographs do but believe they'd be quite difficult to accomplish.











Blurring is a lack of focus in photographs that is used to show movement, speed or perhaps a chaotic environment in photos. 

Definition Page - Colour

Dictionary definition - The property possessed by an object of producing different sensations on the eye as a result of the way it reflects or emits light.

This picture shows some sort marine animal, made up of very bright, very vivid colours. Colour is often used in photography to catch the eye and to represent life or excitement as this is what it is seen as real life. This shows this small animal contrasting with the plain, green background.

I believe this is a very good picture that represents colour very well. It is an underwater picture that shows no more than an explosion of colour.

This picture is very colourful and again, children are involved because colour is often associated with life, laughter, happiness and creation.

This photo again shows a child, though this time with a collection of coloured crayons. This again shows how colour is often associated with life and creation.

All of these photographs are good examples of colour in photography. Each photo is very bright and involves various colours in many different environments. Each of these photographs uses colour to represent life and excitement, the last two involve children and lively colours, while the first picture shows some sort of animal, it represents colour in nature. The second picture is a form aqua photography and is very much an explosion of colour. Each show how colour is often shown with life and excitement or creation, as  it is in real life.

Colour is a property an object possess which is often used in arts and photography to create different moods and feelings for pieces.

Lines – Definition Page

Dictionary definition – A long, narrow mark or band.

This picture shows lines in the sand in a desert. It is a good example of repeated lines in nature, and could also be used as an example of pattern.



I like this photograph; it is a very nice example of lines and could also be used for depth. The converging parallels of the frets and the guitar strings give the photograph depth.


This is also a good example of lines and how they can be used to show depth. The bridge creates narrowing lines and converging parallels using lines.


This photograph is very similar to both the guitar and the bridge. The strings create very defined lines an d are a good example of how lines are seen in everyday life.















These are all good examples of lines, some natural and some man-made lines. Most of these pictures show lines that are symmetrical, though the first picture shows curved lines and though they follow a pattern, they are not entirely symmetrical. Both the photograph of the bridge or pier going out to sea and of the violin are examples of parallel converging lines. These lines give the photographs depth.


My definition - A line is something connecting two points, or a continuous stretch that makes up a shape.
