Definition Page - Pattern

Dictionary Definition - A repeated decorative design.

  • Repeated
  • Decorative
  • Chronological
  • Chequered
  • Even
  • Matching
  • Stripy
  • Spotted

This picture shows how pattern is seen in nature, in animals. This is  very obvious example but does show how many animals are just covered in pattern, whether it's for camouflage or decoration.

This shows how pattern is used by human in construction, it shows how pattern is useful to humans as it strengthens buildings and structures of walls and such. This example of a wall shows how pattern is used in the most simplistic structures that we use and see everyday.
This is an example of how patterns are used by people to represent different things in different situations, such as on roads and signs. These bright colours and the repeated patterns are used and seen in everyday life.

This shows how pattern is seen absolutely everywhere in nature. The feathers themselves are made up of a striped pattern, while the feathers make a pattern, too. It shows how important pattern is in the structure of everything.

My definition - A repeated shape/set of shapes or set of colours.

Pattern - Work Diary

Shooting pattern was very similar to shooting lines, lots of lines are made into patterns in the man-made structures that I was looking at. I did not enjoy this shooting session as much as I enjoyed shooting colour. LIke lines this subject is more tedious than colour, especially around the college as there is not a great variety of entirely different or interesting patterns.

This photo is very similar to those of that I took of walls and lines in the previous formal element. THey vary in the way that lines, obviously concentrate on the lines in the walls, usually following a similar direction. Pattern concentrates on the repeated shape in the walls and in this case on the floor.

I was trying hard to find pattern in nature and flowers, as you can see this didn't go very well, though I'm sure I could find pattern in some plant or another.

If I were to continue this session I would pursue patterns in nature and the outdoors.

Image Bank - Pattern

These photographs are all examples of the visual element pattern. They all show a repeated shape or set of shapes/lines. Three of the photos show such pattern in man-made objects and three show pattern in natural objects. Pattern is very common in construction, such as patterns in bricks and windows and in work places, like the photo of the stools arranged in rows. Patterns are also very common in nature, like on the zebra, animals are often patterned with stripes or spots for camouflage and such, while pattern is also present in the structure of most pieces of nature such as the feathers and construction of the flower.
